Ornina also grows international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Franc planted in 2005.

2009 Trigono IGT (80% Sangiovese, 20% Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo and Pugnitello) This small production wine (under 100 cases made) is very well crafted, it offers a beautiful bouquet of red cherry, cranberry, red currants, licorice, red flowers and a hint of cedar. 2012 Masút Pinot Noir

A Mendocino Pinot Noir with great structure that express the soil where is grown and the great care that is involved in its production. Brothers Jake and Ben Fetzer, sons of Bobby and Sheila Fetzer, are all about growing and making Pinot Noir. They grew up on Home Ranch, a property developed by grandparents Barney and Kathleen Fetzer with the help of their 11 children.

Jake and Ben started working in the vineyards when they were in 5th grade, by 8th grade they were making wine: a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Growing up in the ranch the boys learned early on about the land and the life it supports, developing a great respect for it. “We learned that, with hard honest work and diligence you can achieve your dreams.” says Jake. Their 1500 acre Masút Ranch borders the Home Ranch. Ben remarks “There is so much native land around the vineyard; this whole ranch is a wildlife corridor for deer, turkeys, wild pigs, bear and birds.”

The Fetzer brothers are third generation grape growers and winemakers; their mission is to follow what their grandfather started and continue the pioneer’s vision of their father, of taking advantage of an extraordinary Pinot Noir wine growing region.

The Masút 2012 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard arrived as a sample, a well crafted 100% Pinot Noir. Estate fruit, Dijon clones: 115 (73%), 777 (18%), and 113 (9%) with yields around 3 tons/acre. This great expression of Pinot Noir starts with ripe red fruit aromas, followed by dark plum, Dominican Republic vanilla and notes of brown spices and earth. On the palate, this wine feels silky with flavors of raspberry, dark berries and cinnamon with hints of fresh mushrooms and oak; delicious flavors that linger. Great balance between fruit, acidity and tannins.

This wine was paired the same day that was opened with a bison and pork burger and fried onion rings. The wine accented the mushroom and caramelized onion and shallot flavors on the burger while the gamey and spicy notes on the burger let the earthy and smoky notes on the wine take over the gentle fruit flavors. The second day, we tried this wine with spinach ravioli topped with a wild mushrooms creamy sauce and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. The wine and ravioli flavors merged nicely complementing each other. A great deal Pinot Noir at Suggested Retail Price: $40.00
